Sing your way through the alphabet with this fun A to Z song! Children explore letters and familiar words, from A for apple to Z for zoo, while developing early letter recognition, phonics awareness and memory through rhythm and repetition. The printable activity pack provides additional opportunities to trace, find, count and sequence letters.
Introduce the alphabet and explain that the song will take everyone on a journey from A to Z. Ask children if they can recognise any letters or think of words that begin with them. Use familiar examples such as A for apple, B for ball and C for cat.
Step 2:
Sing the Letters A to Z
4 minutes
Play the video and encourage children to sing along with the letters and repeated chorus. Clap hands during the chorus and listen carefully to the words associated with each letter. Pause occasionally to repeat a letter or word if children want to practise it.
Step 3:
Letter Recognition Game
3 minutes
Choose a few familiar letters from the song and invite children to find or point to them. Say the letter name and its associated word together, such as M for monkey or S for sun. Encourage children to repeat the sounds where appropriate, without expecting them to know every letter yet.
Step 4:
Explore the Alphabet Activity Pack
4 minutes
Choose one suitable activity from the printable pack. Children could trace letters a and m, find hidden m letters in the garden, match the vowels, spot the odd letter out, follow the correct letter stepping stones, complete an alphabet train or continue a repeating letter pattern. Adapt the task to each child's age and ability.
Step 5:
A to Z Recap
2 minutes
Finish by singing the alphabet chorus again. Ask children to name a letter or a word they remember from the song. Celebrate their participation and encourage them to look for familiar letters in books, signs and everyday objects.
