Sing along to the traditional alphabet song and practise the letters from A to Z! Children build familiarity with letter names, alphabetical order and early literacy through clear pronunciation, repetition and cheerful animation. The printable activity pack extends the learning with letter tracing, searching, matching, counting and alphabet puzzles.
Introduce the alphabet and explain that letters are used to make words. Ask children if they recognise any letters, perhaps the first letter of their name. Explain that they will be singing the alphabet together.
Step 2:
Sing the Alphabet
4 minutes
Play the video and encourage children to sing along from A to Z. Point out or show letters as they are sung, helping children follow the sequence. Play the song again if children would enjoy another opportunity to join in.
Step 3:
Explore Letter Shapes
3 minutes
Choose a few familiar letters and invite children to identify them. Look at uppercase and lowercase forms, and talk about their shapes. Practise saying the letter sounds where appropriate, without expecting children to know every sound or letter yet.
Step 4:
Alphabet Activity Pack
4 minutes
Choose one suitable activity from the printable pack. Children could trace letters a and m, search for hidden m letters, match the vowels, find the odd letter out, follow the correct letter stepping stones, or fill in missing letters on the alphabet train. Adapt the task to each child's age and ability.
Step 5:
Sing It One More Time
2 minutes
Finish by singing the alphabet together once more. Invite children to join in with as many letters as they can remember. Celebrate their participation and ask if they can spot a familiar letter around the room or in their own name.
Questions to ask
What letter does the alphabet song start with?
Can you sing some of the letters in order?
Can you find the letter A?
Can you spot a lowercase letter m?
Which vowels can you recognise: a, e, i, o and u?
Can you find a letter that is the same as the first letter of your name?
Finish together
Children practised the alphabet from A to Z through music, repetition and visual recognition. They explored letter shapes, uppercase and lowercase forms, and selected letter sounds, while the printable activities supported early writing, visual discrimination, sequencing and pattern recognition.
